The Lone Star football team takes on Denton Ryan on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Allen’s Eagle Stadium. The Rangers (14-0) and Raiders (14-0) will be playing for a spot in the 5A Division I state championship.

Here are some notes related to the game:

*The last time Lone Star played in a state semifinal was in 2015, and it was also at Eagle Stadium, and it was a thriller. The Rangers beat Lake Dallas 55-49 in three overtimes to become the first Frisco ISD football team to advance to a state championship game.

*Lone Star is trying to win 15 games in a season for the first time. The Rangers won 14 games in 2015, when they finished 14-2 and were the 5A Division II state runners-up.

*This will be the third time Lone Star and Denton Ryan have ever played. The Rangers lost to Ryan in the previous two matchups, which were both during the regular season. Lone Star lost to Ryan 28-21 in 2017 and 51-34 in 2016.

*Ryan is making its fourth straight state semifinal appearance. The Raiders lost in each of those semifinals to Highland Park, which went on to win the state title each time. Lone Star ended Highland Park’s three-year run as state champions by beating the Scots in the regional semifinals two weeks ago. Lone Star also beat Highland Park early in the regular season, becoming the first Texas team to beat the Scots at Highlander Stadium since 1998.

*Lone Star senior Marvin Mims now holds the state and national records for most receiving yards in a season. According to statistics provided by the Dallas Morning News, Mims has 107 catches for 2,502 yards and 31 touchdowns this season.

*Lone Star’s first varsity football season was 2010. The Rangers made their first playoff appearance in 2012 and earned their first playoff win in 2013, when the team advanced to the third round of the 3A Division I playoffs. Lone Star was the 5A Division II state runner-up in 2015, an area finalist in 2016, regional finalist in 2017 and regional semifinalist in 2018.

*Lone Star’s four playoff wins this season, combined with the two playoff wins by each of Frisco ISD’s regional semifinalists, Independence and Frisco, give FISD eight playoff wins this season. Before this season, the most football playoff wins by FISD in a season was six in 2018.

*Jeff Rayburn has been Lone Star’s head coach since 2013. He was previously the team’s offensive coordinator.
