Earlier this season, Lone Star snapped Highland Park's 33-game winning streak. On Friday, Lone Star ended Highland Park's three-year reign as UIL state champ with a thrilling 33-27 overtime win at AT&T Stadium.

Jaden Nixon scored on an 18-yard touchdown run to give the Rangers the victory and a spot in the 5A Division I Region 2 final next week.

Nixon's run ended an intense matchup of two of the state's best teams that was tight throughout. Both teams scored in the first three minutes, but it was tough to move the ball on the defenses after that.

Lone Star took a 27-24 lead with 3:43 left on a 16-yard pass from Garret Rangel to Marvin Mims, who was double-covered on the play -- and throughout the game. The go-ahead touchdown came on fourth down-and-6, and Mims caught the ball between two defenders.

Highland Park responded with a 39-yard field goal that tied the game with 58 seconds left. Lone Star got into Highland Park territory before the end of regulation, but the Scots' defense forced overtime.

Highland Park (11-2) got the ball first in overtime, but Lone Star's defense was again up to the task. The Rangers stopped Highland Park from getting a first down, and Highland Park's field-goal attempt was wide left.

That gave Lone Star (13-0) its chance to put the game away, and the Rangers quickly got the ball solidly into field-goal range. But the field goal wasn't needed, as Lone Star's offensive line opened a hole in the middle of the line and Nixon burst through, sidestepping one diving tackler and then sprinting into the end zone.

Nixon was mobbed by his teammates, as well as coaches, as Lone Star celebrated its second win over Highland Park this season.

Lone Star beat Highland Park 30-19 earlier in the season at Highlander Stadium, becoming the first team from Texas to win at the Scots' home stadium since 1998.

Lone Star will play for the regional title next week against Lancaster.
