The defense also took charge against Independence, which had put up big numbers on offense in its first five games. Independence became the first team to score a first-half touchdown against Lone Star this season, but the Rangers forced Independence to punt on its first drive and then stopped the Knights on fourth-down attempts on its next four possessions.

Lone Star's offense scored touchdowns on five straight drives to take a 35-0 lead before Independence broke through with its first touchdown.

Lone Star, which is No. 1 in the 5A Division I state rankings, next plays The Colony on Friday at The Colony's Tommy Briggs Stadium.
