Dominant Lone Star Snaps Highland Park's 33-Game Win Streak

The Lone Star football team’s 30-19 victory over Highland Park on Friday moved the Rangers to No. 1 in the Dallas Morning News 5A rankings for the first time ever. Here are some other notes related to the game that received statewide attention:

*Lone Star entered the game No. 3 in the Dallas Morning News 5A rankings and Highland Park was the top-ranked team. Lone Star was also No. 3 in the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football 5A Division I state rankings and Highland Park was No. 1. (The DCTF rankings for this week had not been released as of Monday morning).

*Lone Star’s victory snapped a 33-game winning streak for Highland Park, which has won the last three 5A Division I state championships.

*Lone Star became the first team to beat Highland Park at Highlander Stadium since Pulaski Academy, a private school from Arkansas, won there in 2015.

*Lone Star became the first team from Texas to beat Highland Park at Highlander Stadium since 1998. When that last victory by a Texas team occurred, the entire city of Frisco had a population of approximately 25,000 and one high school. Frisco ISD now has 10 high schools and more than 62,000 students.

About Friday’s game …

Lone Star raced to a 24-0 halftime lead, helped by a pair of touchdown passes from Garret Rangel to Marvin Mims. The Rangers’ defense was also sharp in the first half, forcing Highland Park to punt twice and turn over the ball on downs once. Lone Star also intercepted two passes in the first half and finished with four interceptions in the game.

Mims had 11 catches for 231 yards and two touchdowns in the game. Jake Bogdon rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown for Lone Star, which improved to 3-0 entering a bye week before beginning District 5-5A play. Lone Star will open district play on Friday, Sept. 27, against Little Elm at FISD Memorial Stadium.
